Two in three Victorians, or around 66%, oppose recreational duck hunting. In February, Australia’s chief veterinary body joined others by updating its policy on duck shooting to support its prohibition in Victoria, too.

This petition supports Animal Liberation’s submission in response to the inquiry into Victoria’s recreational native bird hunting arrangements.

Hunting causes poor animal welfare outcomes and is opposed by the RSPCA and the majority of Victorians. As “even the most accurate shooters cannot kill reliably”, the RSPCA maintains that “large scale cruelty is inevitable”. It also contradicts the Victorian Government’s Animal Welfare Action Plan.

Waterbird populations are declining due to environmental conditions, and hunting during low recruitment periods can only make matters worse. Therefore, a moratorium on the 2023 annual duck hunting season has been called for by wildlife protection organisations.

Let's protect our waterbirds and their habitats by calling for a ban on recreational hunting in Victoria.
