Behind the fun and marketing of the Royal Agricultural Society of NSW lies a world of hidden animal stress and suffering, and we believe, consumer and family deception. Weโ€™re going to the 2026 Easter Show - and we want you with us.

The Sydney Royal Easter Show is one of Australiaโ€™s most iconic events. Founded in 1823 by the Royal Agricultural Society of NSW (RAS NSW), it attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors every year - many of them families with young children, encountering farm animals for the very first time.

The RAS NSW markets itself as a not-for-profit committed to supporting rural communities and educating the public about sustainable and innovative agriculture. In reality, the show increasingly features events and displays that have nothing to do with sustainable agriculture or rural communities - and everything to do with entertainment at the expense of other-than-human animals and keeping consumers in the dark.

Weโ€™ll be there on ๐’๐š๐ญ๐ฎ๐ซ๐๐š๐ฒ, ๐Ÿ’ ๐€๐ฉ๐ซ๐ข๐ฅ, ๐›๐ž๐ญ๐ฐ๐ž๐ž๐ง ๐Ÿ๐ŸŽ๐š๐ฆ ๐š๐ง๐ ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ๐ฉ๐ฆ ๐š๐ญ ๐‰๐š๐œ๐š๐ซ๐š๐ง๐๐š ๐’๐ช๐ฎ๐š๐ซ๐ž, ๐’๐ฒ๐๐ง๐ž๐ฒ ๐Ž๐ฅ๐ฒ๐ฆ๐ฉ๐ข๐œ ๐๐š๐ซ๐ค. The animals on display at the Easter Show are clean, fed, watered and they have bedding and shelter. They donโ€™t look like or represent the millions of farm animals trapped in intensive industrial animal agriculture. In the sheds and paddocks most farm animals suffer cruel and painful mutilations - many have their tails docked, their ears notched, their teeth or beaks clipped or their sensitive horns removed. Children are naturally drawn to animals. But in the โ€˜showโ€™ environment, they are objects to be gawked at, poked, and prodded, while the reality of the industry that produced them and sends them to slaughter remains carefully hidden from view.

Forcing pigs to dive off diving boards into a swimming pool. Confining young animals into petting zoo enclosures. And rodeo events - night after night - in which cattle and horses are deliberately tormented into unnatural, distressed behaviour using tight flank straps, spurs, and electric prods. None of this represents excellence or innovation in agriculture. None of it supports rural communities. And none of it is what the RAS NSWโ€™s own marketing claims.

The wilful tormenting of cattle and horses to โ€˜performโ€™ is not in keeping with good, low-stress animal handling practices or rural communities.

Hundreds of thousands of people visit the show every year. Many will never have been to a rodeo before. Many will be children. The RAS NSW insists all exhibitors be โ€œfamily friendlyโ€ - and allows these spectacles night after night anyway.

Children watching these events are learning that it is acceptable to torment peaceful herd animals for human entertainment and spectator sports. Many will not know they are watching something that the law itself classifies as cruel.

NSW law defines rodeo activities as cruel - but provides operators with a specific exemption from prosecution.

Animal Liberation applied for a display stand at the 2025 show to provide honest, evidence-based information to the public. Our application was refused.

Weโ€™ve been here before.

Animal Liberation has been advocating at the Sydney Royal Easter Show since the 1980s. This year, as we celebrate our 50th anniversary, weโ€™re going back.

Come to our peaceful rally on Saturday 4 April and stand with us as the public voice for compassion, truth, and transparency at the Sydney Royal Easter Show.

Write to NSW Minister for Agriculture Tara Moriarty at tara.moriarty@parliament.nsw.gov.au and demand greater public transparency about animal agriculture at the Show, and real accountability from rodeo operators - including the publication of animal injury and death statistics.
