Intensive pig farming in Australia is inherently cruel
Designed to commodify pigs through an effective system of maximum ‘yields’ and commercial profits – the Australian pig farming industry relies on fast-paced, cost-efficient intensive pig farming and slaughter at the rate of around 5.8 million pigs each year.
PIGS
Most Australian pigs raised for human consumption are trapped and isolated in cruel, overcrowded and unsanitary industrial housing systems and completely unnatural and stressful environments. Australian pigs suffer from the industry’s painful exempted, ‘routine’ practices, from birth to slaughter, including violent and invasive husbandry procedures without pain relief, premature killing, long-distance transport and pre-slaughter stunning by carbon dioxide gas.
PLANET
Industrial piggeries and pig slaughterhouses are cesspits, emitting large volumes of pollution, including urine, faeces, and blood. A single pig can produce up to 250 litres of effluent per day. Increasingly precious surface and groundwater resources are exploited and wasted to operate piggeries and pig slaughterhouses.
PEOPLE
Leading world health authorities have continued to warn about the health risks of consuming pork products, and the global spread of zoonotic diseases, many of which emanate from the factory farming of animals, including pigs.

About Pigs Without Borders
Across Australia, around 5.8 million pigs are raised and slaughtered for human consumption every year. They are sentient victims, trapped in a system of intensive, industrial pig farming; and it’s not just Aussie pigs that are suffering.
Our Australian governments and the largely self-regulating industry continue to ‘market’ the fictitious notion that the Australian Pork Industry is amongst the ‘world’s best’ in standards of animal welfare, is science based, healthy, sustainable and environmentally friendly.
Our Pigs Without Borders campaign is going to expose the falsehoods about Australian pig farming and production, and present the evidence-based facts.
The truth is industrial-scale pig farming in Australia:
is abusing millions of Australian pigs under industry exempted laws;
is harming our shared environment, including biodiversity;
is posing serious physical, psychological and public health risks to people.
